9 October 2023

An alternator issue can cause your battery to become drained to the point that your car won’t fire up and you end up stranded. So when you first suspect a problem with your alternator, you’ll want to get to the shop. At The Organic Mechanic, we provide expert alternator and auto electric repair in the greater Asheville area. Here’s a look at six warning signs of alternator trouble.

Dashboard Warning Light

In many cases, the first sign of alternator trouble is an illuminated dash light that reads ALT or GEN, or is in the shape of a little rectangular battery icon.

Dead Battery

Typically, car batteries should last for three to five years. But if yours dies much earlier than this timeframe, it could be due to a failing alternator–assuming you didn’t leave your headlights on.

Dimming/Flickering Headlights

Your alternator supplies power to your headlights. If it fails, then your headlights may start to act erratically. This poses a significant safety concern, especially if you have to drive on roads that aren’t lit up by street lamps.

Issues with Electrical Accessories

A malfunctioning alternator can cause problems with your vehicle’s electrical accessories, including the power windows, power seats, power locks, and radio.

Burning Odor/Belt Problems

There are numerous automotive issues that can cause a burning smell, with one of the possibilities being alternator belt slippage. It’s good to periodically inspect your belts. Alternator trouble may arise if a belt is too loose, too tight, or cracked.

Stalling Out

If your alternator isn’t working right, then your spark plugs may not receive enough power, consequently causing your engine to misfire and stall.
