Top Reasons Your Car Won't Start

9 September 2022

When your vehicle first starts struggling to start, you’ll want to get to the shop for an inspection. By being proactive, you’ll have the best chance to prevent the problem from worsening to the point that your engine won’t start at all and you end up stranded. At The Organic Mechanic, our local auto shop provides expertise with diagnosing and fixing issues that cause no-start.

What are common reasons that cars won’t start?

Battery/charging system problems often prevent vehicles from firing up. A variety of issues can cause a car battery to die, including old age, parasitic draws, corroded/loose connections, and forgetting to turn off your headlights. A failing alternator can also cause a dead battery. Symptoms of alternator trouble include problems with electrical accessories, as well as an illuminated warning light that reads ALT or GEN or illuminates in the shape of a small rectangular battery.

Another common cause of no-start is a faulty starter. You have evidence of starter trouble if you turn the key and your car doesn’t start but you hear a clicking sound and your dash lights come on. A bad starter can also cause a grinding noise.

Fuel-related problems can also cause the vehicle to struggle to start. A gunked-up fuel filter can prevent sufficient fuel from reaching the engine to get it to fire up. To prevent such a problem, it’s a good idea to replace your fuel filter about every 25,000 miles. Fouled-up fuel injectors can also cause problems with getting the car to start. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can help with eliminating contaminants from injectors. Also, your car may not start properly if your fuel pump is failing. Symptoms of fuel pump trouble include surging, sputtering, decreasing MPGs, and a whining sound emerging from the gas tank.
