What are simple ways to reduce the risk of major transmission trouble?

31 October 2022

Serious transmission problems tend to be very expensive to repair, so you’ll want to take some simple precautions. At The Organic Mechanic, we can do basic transmission maintenance that will help to prevent major issues from developing. However, if you do notice a sign of transmission trouble, you’ll want to get to the shop ASAP so the issue can hopefully be nipped in the bud. Here are three easy ways to help prevent major transmission problems.

Always Follow Your Transmission Fluid Exchange Schedule

Transmission fluid provides cooling, lubrication, rust prevention, and fluid pressure, making it highly important that your car is operating with fluid that is clean and at the right level. During a transmission fluid exchange, old polluted fluid is drained and replaced with uncontaminated fluid. Generally, vehicles need their transmission fluid to be exchanged somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 miles, but you’ll want to check your owner’s manual to see your car’s specific requirement for how often its transmission fluid should be changed.

Keep an Eye on Your Transmission Fluid

It’s a good idea to check your transmission fluid on a monthly basis. By doing so, it’s much more likely that you’ll notice early if your fluid is getting too low and/or burning. Typically, transmission fluid is best checked with the engine still on.

Get to the Shop ASAP if You Notice Any Signs of Transmission Trouble

Common signs of a transmission problem include transmission fluid leaks, delayed/rough shifting, and the vehicle suddenly slipping out of gear while cruising along. In manual transmissions, you should watch out for symptoms of a clutch problem, such as grinding, burning smells, and a clutch pedal that is sticky or noisy. By getting to the shop quickly, you’ll have the best chance to address the problem before it escalates and costs a lot more to fix.
