4 April 2023

At the first indication of an engine problem, you’ll want to make it a top priority to have the mechanic take a look. If you ignore the symptom, it could soon escalate and cause a much bigger problem that is more expensive to address. At The Organic Mechanic, our local auto shop specializes in engine diagnostics and repair in the greater Asheville, NC area.

The Check Engine Light Turns On

If your check engine light flashes on, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your engine is on the verge of something catastrophic. However, you’ll want to visit the shop ASAP for computerized diagnostics so that the issue can be pinpointed and taken care of before it gets worse.

Warning Signs of an Engine Problem

Power loss is one reason to be concerned. In older cars, a gradual loss of a little power over the years isn’t necessarily cause for alarm. However, if your car has a sudden and major dropoff in power, then you could be dealing with something significant, such as piston or head gasket trouble.

You’ll want to have the mechanic conduct an inspection if you hear any strange sounds coming from your engine. Knocking/tapping noises can be caused by a variety of issues, such as bad timing, failing rod bearings, and insufficient lubrication. If you're hearing squealing noises, then there’s a good chance you have a serpentine belt problem. Grinding sounds can be caused by issues with water pumps and power steering.

Another sign of engine trouble is that you’re noticing discolored/excessive exhaust smoke. White smoke is a sign of an internal coolant leak, and could mean that you have a blown head gasket. Black smoke suggests that an excessive amount of fuel is being burned. Blue-tinted smoke is a symptom of an oil leak.
